Off The Beaten Track

Cameron Highlands is all about overcrowded night markets, weekend traffic jams, jam-packed cafes and overbooked steamboat restaurants, overpriced food and souvenirs, what else? The list goes on.

Yup, you saw that picture. Take a look at the usual weekend traffic. MADNESS. You'll be trapped here for hours.

Being a local here, I’m actually felt pretty sad about the fact that Cameron Highlands is getting more commercialized over the years.

But hey, you can actually travel off the beaten path, here’s how ->

9 ways to travel like a local in Cameron Highlands, MALAYSIA

#1 - Hike up to see the world’s largest flower - Rafflesia

#2 - Jog along the narrow roads in the private tea estate. Yes, you could do that and that’s awesome! How? Look for a local host!

#3 - Skip tourist hotels & apartments, stay away from the crowds, look for alternatives on Airbnb.com where you can find unique accommodations in Cameron Highlands such as this one: airbnb.com/rooms/2169304 Price starts only at RM175 per night.

#4 - Mossy Forest a.k.a The Lord Of The Rings Forest. And yes, the Pandas came for a visit too.

#5 - Half-boiled eggs anyone? Yes, you got that right. Picnic by the hot spring is fun! Bring some soy sauce and pepper with you.

#6 - Skip tea & scones. Yes, they are delicious but I tell you, there are other hidden gems you didn’t know existed. Go have a local Pao and a cup of Kampung Cham (Amazing Coffee) instead. You won't regret!

#7 - Art searching. I won’t be telling you the exact locations, they’re all for you to search.

#8 - Brinchang Night Market has lost its charm many years ago. It's not local anymore, the market is now customized for tourists. Sad, but there are other local night markets that are worth a visit.

  • Kampung Raja – Every Monday, 4:30PM – 8:30PM

  • Kuala Terla – Every Wednesday, 4:30PM – 8:30PM

  • Tringkap – Every Friday, 4:30PM – 8:30PM

Believe it or not, the best Apam Balik (Corn & Peanut Pancake) can be found here. Don’t say I didn’t tell ya. What else? You go and explore yourself. All I know is everything is cheaper.

Note: These markets are very local. So, don’t be surprised if the villagers can’t take their eyes off you ;) Nothing much, they are just happy that you’re here. Say hello!

#9 - Last but not least, enjoy the REAL night skyline of Cameron Highlands - The Valley Of Lights located in Kuala Terla

Happy traveling! Coming up next, I’ll be sharing some best spots to eat in Cameron Highlands. Cheers.
